Buying a Business in Hertfordshire

If you are looking for businesses for sale, Hertfordshire is a great area to buy a because of its close proximity to London and good transport links to the rest of the country. It lies to the North of the capital, has a population of more than a million and many people who live here work in the city, making it an affluent area.

Businesses based in the Home Counties, such as Hertfordshire, get the best of both worlds. Like London businesses, they are centrally located so easily accessible and can get into the capital quickly for meetings with clients. They are close to 3 international airports (Heathrow, Luton and Stansted), and have excellent road links to the South, North, East and West via the M25. At the same time overheads such as rent and mortgage payments are lower than a central London location, making day to day running costs more affordable.

Among the most populated towns and cities in Hertfordshire are Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City, Cheshunt, Bishops Stortford, Borehamwood, Hitchin, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hertford and Potters Bar. Hertfordshire is also home to the headquarters of many large UK companies.

Watford: Houses the head offices of companies such as J D Wetherspoon, Iveco and the Camelot Group. It is also the UK base for many multi-national companies including Sanyo and TK Maxx. It is a major regional centre for the northern home counties and is situated 20 miles from Central London and within the bounds of the M25.

Hemel Hempstead: The town has seen extensive redevelopment in recent years including retail parks and office blocks. A mix of heavy and light engineering companies are based here and it is an attractive town for IT and telecommunications companies because it is so close to London with excellent transport links.

Stevenage:  The town is located east of junctions 7 and 8 of the A1 and is 30 miles north of central London. It has a population of 85,000 and the town is set to expand further. GlaxoSmithKline is a major employer and has a large pharmaceutical research laboratory complex here.

St Albans: A city 22 miles north of London and within the London commuter belt. Property prices are well-known for being high in the area and the district is seen as one of the most expensive in the United Kingdom.

One of its well-known employers is Tesco.

Bishops Stortford: An affluent area, close to Stansted airport. It has been undergoing lots of redevelopment and building work including a new town centre, apartments, houses and penthouses. It is surrounded by many small towns and villages, so it draws in a number of people for shopping, employment and entertainment. Bishop’s Stortford is a commuter town for many who work in the finance industry in London. It also attracts people in the tourist industry including hotel and catering staff, as well as airline staff because of its close proximity to the airport. A high percentage of the town’s population work in the services sector.

Borehamwood: A commuter town which has undergone changes in recent years with lots of redevelopment work including hundreds of new homes built. More building work is expected including new shops and offices and light industry.  The town is home to Elstree film studios, where Eastenders is filmed. Several large companies and organisations including DVLA, Natwest and Barclays have big offices based here. Borehamwood has excellent transport links, the A1 passes east of the town and the M25 is about two miles north.

Hitchen: The station is on the great Northern Line and within easy reach of London, Peterborough, Stevenage and Cambridge.

Harpenden: Property prices are especially high here. Harpenden is linked by rail to central London and is a stop away from Luton Airport by rail. The train takes just an hour and ten minutes from here to London Gatwick.

Hatfield: It used to be associated with the aircraft industry. Now the former British Aerospace site is a business park and campus for the University of Hertfordshire. The site offered major new employment opportunities and is also home to well-known companies such as T-Mobile. Hatfield has good transport links, the A1 road runs through the town and it is near to the M25. A 22 minute rail service takes you to London Kings Cross. Hatfield is 14 miles from Luton Airport and is close to Stansted Airport.
