England’s Main Regions
England is a regionally diverse country with big differences in several business-relevant factors such as property prices, wages, and transport links. Here we provide a brief overview of the main regions indicating some of the factors particularly affecting each region.
Businesses for Sale – London
London can almost be thought of as a business region on its own. There are a several factors which make the London business environment unique. In particular, overheads such as property prices and rents are highest here. Wages also tend to be higher in the London area, with many national companies paying a London weighting. However, these costs are offset by a number of other positive factors and opportunities, especially the prestige attached to owning a business with a London address. For a business involved in trade or collaboration with Europe, a London base provides the international air and rail links necessary to reach Europe and the rest of the world. The sheer number of other businesses in the capital, as well as a population of 7.5 million people, all creates a large potential customer base for your business. Niche businesses in particular are most likely to thrive in London where even highly specialised services can find a good number of customers. Any business designed to cater to the needs of other businesses generally experience good levels of demand (e.g. recruitment, property management and commercial cleaning).
Businesses for Sale – South East
The South East is comprised of the Home Counties Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, and Berkshire. Their proximity to London and associated road and rail links allow companies to benefit from many of the advantages of being based close to London, but without the same level of overheads. The Home Counties have high populations, creating demand for businesses offering healthcare and recruitment – and many Londoners eventually move to the Home Counties to live or retire. This region is therefore the most prosperous in the UK and offers a buoyant business environment, particularly for established companies.
Businesses for Sale – East Anglia
East Anglia (Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire) is well connected to London via good rail links through Ipswich, Norwich and Cambridge and major road links A12 and M11. It is also well connected to the rest of the UK, especially the Midlands, via the A14 and A47. Meanwhile the ports of Felixstowe and Lowestoft, and Norwich City airport offer good trade links with Europe and further afield. As well as providing a good base for access to London, East Anglia offers many opportunities for all types of businesses catering for their own populations. With its extensive eastern coastline and large expanse of rural countryside, East Anglia is a popular place both to live and retire and there are many retirement homes and other healthcare businesses based in the region. Recruitment companies also thrive here, finding employment in London for local people, or supplying local businesses with a workforce. Property prices and rents are also significantly lower than those of London and the South East, making the region an attractive location for many businesses.
Businesses for Sale – North
The North West and North East of England offer perhaps the best value locations to run a business in England. The combination of low overheads, good skill levels (from a large number of regional Universities), extensive road and rail links, international ports and airports (e.g. Manchester, John Lennon Liverpool, Newcastle) all add up to an excellent environment for business. In 2008 Manchester was rated as the second best location for a business in the UK, with Liverpool appearing in 11th place. As you might expect, manufacturing and engineering businesses benefit from the wealth of local skill and good transport links, and many logistics companies are based here. Associated service businesses such as commercial cleaning and recruitment are also well represented. Meanwhile, healthcare businesses such as care homes and domiciliary care agencies cater for the large, chiefly city-based population (e.g. Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, York, Newcastle), as well as locating themselves amongst some of the UK’s best natural scenery which includes two coastlines and the Lake District.
Businesses for Sale – Midlands
The Midlands is a heavily populated region that includes much of the UK’s industrial heartland. The region has many motorways running through it, including several major North-South routes, as well as intersecting East-West routes. This makes the Midlands a good base for logistics businesses that need access to major motorways, as well as manufacturing businesses that need to bring in raw materials and distribute finished goods. Many support companies are attracted to the region, including commercial cleaning businesses, recruitment agencies, packaging firms, and other services such as security and communications. The large population means a steady demand for healthcare businesses of all kinds. Property prices and wages tend to be lower than in the south, making the Midlands a good value place to operate from.
Businesses for Sale – South West
The South West region includes the far west counties of Cornwall and Devon, along with Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire to the east. The region was once perceived as being too remote from London to be taken seriously as a business location, but the M4, combined with good rail links (Exeter is just over 2 hours from London) means that this is no longer true. And the recent proliferation of broadband means that South West businesses can now compete effectively with others in the UK, while taking advantage of lower wages and rental costs. Many of our main industrial sectors are well represented in the South West, with many thriving nursing homes and agencies reflecting the popularity of the region as a retirement location. Logistics companies are in good demand, supplying the region with essential goods and exporting produce. And there has been a recent growth in creative industries fuelled by talent from the many Arts education centres in the region. This in turn creates a demand for service businesses of all kinds including cleaning, property management, telecommunications and so on.
